"It's a very common career for Arkanians. Medicine, genetic engineering, and cybernetics are our main industries. Well, that and diamond production. It brings Arkania a great deal of wealth, getting visitors from other species to take care of difficult and rare ailments. But my father was a Senator before the Empire replaced the Republic. He was a very compassionate and caring man so I was raised with those ideals. Thus, when I learned medicine I was more worried about how best I could help people over hospital profits."

"But I just try to live up to his example. He started in medicine as well before he became a senator. And after the start of the clone wars he used his influence to follow the troops around, setting up relief centers and caring for survivors. He ended up getting killed in a separatist attack. I hate war."

[Jyrvess Ertil]

"War is an action of necessity, a final act once everything else is exhausted." Jyvress sipped her coffee, "No one sane loves it, or at least that is what my father used to say. Followed by 'but there are a lot of insane people'. Probably ironic as he was a General in the Republic's army before the war and served beneath the Jedi during it."

"He didn't survive his time in the army." She adds quietly.

"Probably be hard pressed to find anyone in the galaxy that hasn't been touched by it. I know there are some that would like to see the Imperials gone from here, follow in the footsteps of the Angels even. I hope it doesn't come to fighting, but if it does all I'll be able to do is support the people that have taken me in."

[Jyrvess Ertil]

"The problem you will find with the Imps is they have no problems using violence." Jyvress frowns, "It's easier and fear is their currency. They want a beaten haggard people who shiver in terror at the thought of retribution." Her jaw clenches for a moment then relaxes, "Make no mistake Doctor, if they think you are a threat...and for them working on possible Rebels is more then enough...and they will hurt you. Because to them that's the answer to every problem."

"I get that. And I know that it's something we need to resist. But engaging them in open conflict will do nobody any good. The Empire has resources and manpower that small forces can't compete with and gives them all the propaganda they need to keep others in line. Creating doubt and undermining their message is the first step in giving hope back to those that have lost it. I wonder how many in their great bureaucratic machine are only there because they've lost hope?"

[Jyrvess Ertil]

Jyrvess just stares into her cup as he speaks, she starts to say something then stops. Her jaw working with no words. Finally she manages to say. "The War didn't kill my father. The Empire did." Her eyes flick up and look into Tosath's, "He stayed in the army after the Clone Wars, despite misgivings on what it had become and hoped he could change it from the inside. In the end he was too popular with his men, and a war hero to boot, for them to execute. And to force him into retirement would have still left a man powerful enough to be even just a minor threat to them. So they engineered his death fighting some of the last holdouts from the CIS."

"The Empire is built on violence and understands only violence." She shrugs and tosses her empty cup in the trash, "I need to get back to work."

Tosath nods to her, "Sounds like he was a good man that cared for his people. I'm sorry that he was taken from you, and that we all lost him. But his death also shows that the Empire has fear of good people. Don't forget that they fear those that would resist, no matter how they resist."

[Jyrvess Ertil]

Jyrvess clenched her jaw again, then shook her head. "Thank you for the pleasant conversation Doctor." Her eyes didn't meet his, though it didn't take an expert to see her mood had grown far darker when she had spoken on her father's death.
