Aliit Ori'shya Tal'din (D3, EA)

Post by Raven Cadera » Thu Jul 16, 2020 3:44 am

After having checked on Dex, and given her some reading assignments on Mando'a (because not knowing the Mandalorian greeting was just unacceptable), Raven went looking for Praxton.

She still had more training to do herself.

Praxton would be found in the armory, using the tools present to maintain his gear. With his helmet off so he might perform the work in comfort.

Wearing her armor, but carrying her helmet for the time being, Raven watched him for a moment, giving some time to make sure he wasn't doing something terribly dangerous that she shouldn't interrupt.

"Praxton. Su cuy'gar," she said as she stepped forward, seeing a moment to speak up in his work.

"Su'cuy, Sister," he said. Setting his rifle down carefully before looking from it to her. "I am glad that you are with us. It would seem that this planet will offer us some trials, and young blood, strong blood, it is needed in such times."

She looked down at her helmet for a moment, before looking up again at him. "You mean about the Saxon yesterday? You think he brought friends that's going to be more problems for everyone here?"

"No, I believe a man like him was wishing to hunt alone. Yet.. now that he is certain there are more of us here, I do not know. Saxon is not one who would lightly allow us to grow, our strength to grow, otherwise we might threaten the strength of his own position. When that hunter reports back to Saxon I would not doubt the lengths to which he might respond. We will need to be ready," he said.

"Yeah... we'll have to be ready for the worst." A full on attack by a squadron of Saxons would be bad. They'd outnumber them, not to mention that they probably had far superior weapons and armor - even those who chose the Imperial laminate over proper beskar'gam. Varina didn't seem to have much gear, and while Raven was slightly better off in that regard, her gear was also what she had scavenged or saved over the years.

"Dex is still going to need some time to recover to be in fighting shape. In the meantime, I need to work on my own skills to be good enough to train her. As well as my gear." Raven sighed softly. "Will you continue to train me in the meantime?"

"I was still the one who sponsored you, of course. Though, as you are a sponsor now yourself perhaps we should focus on other sills you will find useful? You are clearly adept as a hunter, a fighter, perhaps not as great as you would like but your skill now is impressive already. Far greater than some."

"Hm..." she didn't feel quite as adept yet, but there was probably a point in what he was saying that she just wasn't on the level she wanted to be. "I like to think I know the basics of all the skills a Mandalorian should know, but I don't know what I need to know to be a teacher. Most of what I know, is self-taught in the years I've been on my own, just further working on the stuff my parents taught us... none of which prepared me to become a teacher myself."

Raven knew that raising warriors and seeing to the training of one's offspring was a fundamental part of the Resol'nare, but that part had always kind of been... on hold, for her.

"Dex strikes me as the kind of girl too who won't honestly tell me her shortcomings."

"No," he holds a sigh, steadies himself. "When Tiroc brought her back, it was a perfect match. Her fire burning against his, they did not need to convey what the other needed as it matched well. You.. you have the opportunity to be as good as a teacher as he was. What you should understand as Tiroc did is that the woman will do her best to prove herself to you, and this may place her in danger. Be there, guide her and protect her, and she will grow in time as a warrior."

"Though.." he thought, "you say you trained yourself. Honed your own skills. You have not sparred against a Mentor before, then, have you?"

So Dex was a lot like Varina, it seemed to her. Question was if the problems would double if the two met, or if they could learn from eachother... something to keep in mind.

"No, I haven't had that chance," she admitted, "my brother and I would spar sometimes, our parents trying to teach us tactics while we did, but... guess that's not the same."

And back then, it had been more like a game. A more violent game than non-Mandalorian kids played, but a game still in the mind of a child.

"We shall spar then, over the coming days. First.." he said, putting his helmet on and setting aside his rifle somewhere safe. "Come with me, we shall hone your skills today that you might discover what you should focus on."

"Thank you." As he put on his helmet, she followed suit and put on hers as well.

"I suppose fighting unarmed is one of my weaker points in a fight... now that I think about it." And she wasn't thinking too much about the task of being a teacher.

"Come then," he said, walking her out and toward another one of their chambers. There she saw that the central floor was filled with sand and practice weapons littered the side, wooden for novices and dulled for the proper warriors to train. As Raven wished for unarmed he walked toward the center.

"First.. let us test your limits, I will defend and you will strike. Approach and try to hit me, Sister," he said, assuming a traditional Mandalorian stance.

Assuming her stance it was clear it was one born out of experience and nescessity, and not proper training or tradition. Her arms remained close to her body and the placement of her feet favored speed over balance.

Which did work to her advantage at first...

"You did good, proper strike, reached your target and in a bar brawl it would be enough to put down your opponent as long as you hit harder," he said, nodding his head. With a pivot of his foot he swept Raven's leg out from under herself and she fell backward to the ground.

"Your footwork could use a lot of work though," he said, rolling his shoulder to work out the stiffness that the hit awakened. "Now, try it again but pay attention to your foot work."

"Sounds like you figured out where I learned to throw a punch," she joked with a low chuckle to hide her discomfort from being knocked on her back.

Grunting slightly she got back up on her feet. "Did your parents teach you to fight like this?" Assuming her stance again, she was more aware of her feet this time, once more striking swiftly with a quick jab.

"Once my brother left my parents realized how ill they had prepared their son, and worked double to teach me our ways. My father was relentless, as was my mother, and from their guidance I grew," he said. Using the momentum of her strike to offer himself the advantage of position on her, "See?" he said simply.

"Again," he said, preparing himself for his defense.

Nodding, she got back into her stance once more. This time the strike packed a bigger punch than previously, but there was still some recklessness to her way of fighting, and some mistakes in there from her preference of fighting with a sword.

"I thought you said..." the first punch was followed up with another, "Mandalore's your brother. Blood-brother. How many do you have?"

"It was my brother who left home early, Mandalore. When he was but a teenager he abandoned home for much of the same beliefs that he holds now, that our culture is failing," he said, blocking the last strike down into a grip on her arm. A nod at the impressive strike. "Our heritage is in danger of being lost because the majority of the Mandalorian people have lost sight of what it means to be a Mandalorian, to follow the way."

They would continue their training as they spoke, "Mandalore left home and learned among the stars, in what conflicts and trials I do not know. When he returned he found our peoples plight as it is now, bowing to the Saxons who we knew as family who bowed willingly to the Empire. At first he tried to re-assimilate into home, to change direction from the inside but the resistance he found among his own people inspired him to take off again. It is then that I followed, and so did many others who had heard of his path."
