While "The Forge" would ever be closed access to only the Forgemaster, there was another workshop that Clay was allowed to make use of. Given his time he eventually would be able to make himself a shield. Unfortunately the second result wasn't very effective and was little more than a piece of scrap metal. Nothing that couldn't be reforged.
